Friends Can Be Different

These two equines couldn’t be more different. Obviously they are completely different in size and breed. One is actually a little donkey and the other is a Friesian. One comes to about your thigh, and the other one can look down on you.

Their ears are different, they come from different places, and their temperaments are different. Yet somehow these two became best of friends.

It started when the owner wanted to get a companion for the big Friesian, but did not want another large size horse. Someone suggested a donkey. No one knew how tight these two would become.

When in the barn, the donkey would duck under the stall guards and leave its stall to join the  Friesian in its stall. It happened so often they gave up putting him back. The donkey was also more than willing to follow along if the Friesian was being ridden.

I originally took the photo because I liked the contrast of size, the lighting, and the snow. The pink croc and hula -hoop were toys that the donkey played with.

But I also realized that it was an interesting contrast showing how different animals can get along. And while both of these are of the equine family, they certainly are different. They come from different countries, and they speak a different language. A donkey certainly does not sound like a horse.

I sometimes wonder why people can’t get along as easily as animals can. I also wondered how well they could communicate. If you have ever heard a donkey and a horse you know they are truly different and to hear them would make you think they were an entirely different species if you didn’t know better. I am sure most of the communication is non-verbal, but interesting none the less.

This photo is a great reminder to all that Friends Truly Can Be Different. In fact this photo has been displayed at an educational facility to remind kids of that very thing.

Here is to all our friends, regardless of where they are from.
